Flooding Frenzy

Crazy weather terrorizes Hawaiʻi residents

According to a popular tourist site, the wettest months for the Hawaiian islands are between the months of November and March in the winter time. Another popular tourist website describes how during these months, downpour up to 2-5 inches can rain down on the islands. KITV4 reports on how despite this, downpour can reach up to 30 inches.

“It (weather) impacts the people who get their homes destroyed. It can destroy a lot of nature, it can cause mudslides. So it can destroy property, destroy beach fronts, and it can destroy nature.” Kiel Cassandra Duldulao, Farrington High School student, c/o 2026

According to KITV4, Moloka’i was faced with nearly 30 inches of rain. Once the ground is unable to absorb anymore rain, the water starts to fall elsewhere, such as roads. Soil takes a while to dry, so constant rain can cause issues such as flash flooding, but this isn’t the only way flooding can occur.

“There’s numerous ways flooding can occur. If the ground is saturated, then it gets so full of water that the water just keeps on rising up, and that can cause flooding.” explained Diana Barker, a science teacher at Farrington High School. “If you’re at sea level and it’s high tide, the water’s already coming in and it’s raining, that can cause flooding. If the ground is very dry, then it doesn’t absorb the water as quickly and that can cause flooding. That’s three different ways.”

As KHON2 reported, schools on Moloka’i were temporarily closed due to extreme rain and flooding. Schools are not the only places closed down due to flooding, roads are also commonly closed down due to flooding.

Kiel Cassandra Duldulao, a Farrington High School student, also finds that excessive rain can be an issue. “Flooding and rain is pretty prevalent in my area. Living at a higher place near the mountains often causes the rain to be a bit more intense, which leads to slight flooding.”

Duldulao isn’t the only one who can find issues with flooding or heavy rains. Barker also believes that flooding can be an issue. “It impacts the people who get their homes destroyed. It can destroy a lot of nature, it can cause mudslides. So it can destroy property, destroy beach fronts, and it can destroy nature.”

Reported by KHON2, boulders have been crashing down and some have also impacted homes. The constant rainfall and slight erosion from the rain causes the base which the boulders sit on to erode, causing them to topple from the mountains. Dry conditions can also cause these boulders to fall from the hillside, as the rain rolls off the ground.
